Lights On Afterschool Celebrates 25 Years: Help Us Light Up the ‘Trenton Makes’ Bridge!

For 25 years, Lights On Afterschool has been a beacon of hope, learning, and growth for millions of children across the nation. This annual event, organized by the Afterschool Alliance, celebrates the importance of afterschool programs and their impact on youth, families, and communities. And this year, we’re lighting up one of New Jersey’s most iconic landmarks to mark the occasion!

Today (Thursday, October 24th), we invite you to join us as we celebrate this milestone by spotlighting the “Trenton Makes, The World Takes” sign on the Lower Trenton Bridge. This bridge connects Trenton, New Jersey to Morrisville, Pennsylvania, and the illuminated sign has long been a symbol of the city’s rich industrial legacy. With your help, we can make this anniversary shine even brighter!

The History of the ‘Trenton Makes’ Bridge

If you’ve ever crossed the Lower Trenton Toll-Supported Bridge, you’ve seen the famous sign that reads, “Trenton Makes – The World Takes.” But did you know that this iconic phrase wasn’t originally intended for the bridge? Back in 1910, the Trenton Chamber of Commerce held a slogan contest to promote the city’s industrial prowess, and “Trenton Makes – The World Takes” was born. Over the last century, this slogan has adorned the bridge in various forms, reminding millions of travelers of the city’s global contributions.

In 2018, the bridge got a modern upgrade with programmable LED lighting, making the sign shine brighter than ever. Now, the sign not only stands as a testament to Trenton’s industrial past but also as a local attraction that draws people in from far and wide. This year, as part of the Lights On Afterschool celebration, the bridge will once again light up to honor the power of afterschool programs and their role in shaping the next generation of innovators and leaders.

Why Afterschool Programs Matter

Afterschool programs offer a safe, enriching environment for kids once the school day ends. From boosting academic achievement to fostering social skills and creativity, these programs provide critical support for students and working families alike. In New Jersey, thousands of children benefit from these programs, and with more resources, even more kids could have access to life-changing opportunities.

Lights On Afterschool is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on these programs and their essential role in our communities. According to the Afterschool Alliance, participation in afterschool programs is linked to improved reading and math scores, better school attendance, and stronger support for working families. In fact, for every child currently in an afterschool program in New Jersey, three more are waiting for a spot. Events like Lights On Afterschool help raise awareness and support for expanding these opportunities.
