iLearn Schools, a 2024 Engage Every Student Initiative Recognition Program Champion

New Jersey program is one of 13 to be honored nationwide

NJSACC: New Jersey’s Afterschool & Out-of-School-Time Professional Network congratulates iLearn Schools in partnership with North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools and Linden Public School District for being selected as a 2024 Engage Every Student Initiative Recognition Program Champion by the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Engage Every Student Initiative.

Launched in 2022, the initiative was created to help ensure that every student who wanted a spot in a high-quality afterschool and/or summer-learning program has one. It is a partnership between the ED, the Afterschool Alliance, the School Superintendents Association (AASA), the National League of Cities, the National Summer Learning Association, and the National Comprehensive Center at Westat.

The recognition program, in its inaugural year, is celebrating 13 nonprofit organizations and cities, working in partnership with their local school districts for their efforts to expand access to high-quality afterschool and summer-learning programs throughout the country.

The program was chosen out of 57 nominations from 29 states and demonstrated excellence in:

  • Employing evidence-based approaches, such as engaging students in experiential learning that could include project-based learning, enrichment, career pathways, and field trips; prioritizing students needing additional support; and having certified teachers delivering the academic instruction and tutoring.

  • Increasing their programmatic enrollment number of K-12 students from school year (SY) 2022-23 to SY 2023-24 by a minimum of 20%.

  • Serving students who attend schools with 40% or more students qualifying for the free and reduced-price lunch program at the beginning of the 2023-24 SY.

  • Leveraging American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds and state and local funds to expand access to afterschool and summer-learning programs for students.

Representatives from iLearn Schools and NJSACC  will travel to Washington, D.C. for the 2024 Engage Every Student Summit on July 16, where the champions will be recognized and there will be opportunities for learning, exploration, and networking with other program providers, state and local leaders, elected officials, and youth.
